Statement Pieces: Mid-Century Focal Points for Every Room

Maeve Entertainment Unit with Open Shelves - Natural

Mid-century design is inspired by trends set years ago and is still a popular style (for good reason). Vintage charm is hard to beat. But before you can give your space a stylish retro feel, you’ll need to secure a great focal point.

They don’t just draw attention. They also balance the aesthetics of the room and bring the style together in a cohesive way. They help to capture attention before directing the eye to flow naturally over the rest of the room.

But how do we get started, and what should we look for? This article will guide you through picking a strong visual anchor in every mid-century room you want to create.

Focal Point Fundamentals

A focal point – or statement piece – draws the eye the moment you enter a room. It also sets the tone for the room, so it’s best if it fits the chosen style of your room.

A statement piece can have several characteristics to help create a visual impact. Bold shapes and interesting textures are great, and placement can further help to enhance its presence in the space.

That said, a focal point doesn’t have to be a piece of furniture. If you have interesting architecture in the room you’re renovating, you can use that as an anchor and design around it. This could be a textured wall (old stone wall) or a fireplace, for example.

Overall, it’s important to maintain a cohesive overall look that blends well, but it all starts with that central statement piece. So let’s explore options for each room in the home.

Living Space Focal Points

Living spaces offer us plenty of choices for a statement piece. We could use an especially interesting window in social spaces, or a fine fireplace in a TV room. If you don’t have architecture that can serve as a focal point, you can opt for a wide variety of furniture.

A vintage chair, coffee table, or entertainment unit can do the job. You could even opt for a large retro-inspired painting on an accent wall, the options are nearly endless.

Whatever you choose, it should make an impact. Bold shapes, interesting textures, and eye-catching colours, all in the spirit of mid-century style

Position your feature element according to the room. The point is to have the eye fall on it the moment someone enters, so if you have more than one entrance, position it according to the main entrance to the room.

Furnish and decorate the room around this piece. Include low-key furniture that suits the style but doesn’t draw more attention than the focal piece. The Maeve Entertainment Unit and Eve Coffee Table are great examples. Each offers retro style but not demanding too much attention.

Finally, consider lighting. You’ll want your lighting to compliment the focal point of the room. For example, when using a painting for this purpose, use accent lighting to highlight the piece and draw additional attention.

With your living room in fine shape, let’s move on to the rest of the home.

Dining Area Statement Pieces

Your dining area offers two main choices, the table and the seating. The most obvious statement piece could be a grand, vintage dining table. Nothing beats the style of an old, heavy, lovingly made table. However, these often require a large amount of space and can cost a fortune. So you might opt for something simpler and draw attention to your seating, instead.

You can match a simpler dining table such as the Kyoto with modern-retro seating like the Londyn range, for example.

Your seating will be hidden most of the time, so a painting, a bold centrepiece, or an accent wall will work better. Finish the look off with a fitting buffet such as the Eros.

Again, consider using lighting to draw additional focus to your statement piece of choice. After a hearty meal in your retro-inspired dining room, it’s time to retire to the bedroom.

Mid-Century Bedroom Focal Points

In the bedroom, we can add a painting or mirror as a key feature, but what helps ground a retro bedroom is the bed frame. Opting for a stylish mid-century-inspired bedframe is a great choice.

Use cushions and throws in a purposely designed modern-vintage colour palette to complete the look. You can also use natural wood-look bedside tables to further complement the look, such as the Owen bedside table.

Finally, complete the bed area with a decorative art piece on the bedside tables, or even a sculptural lamp

Complete the room with a final touch in the form of a dresser that fits your palette or style. A beautiful natural wooden look as seen in the Blair dresser can bring the themed look together. Alternatively, round off your colour palette with something like the Cove dresser, instead.

After a good night’s rest, it’s time to head to the office.

Home Office Impact Pieces

The home office is a place of focus, so ideally you don’t want to distract from that with focal points other than the desk. So with that in mind, pick out a desk that will serve as a fine visual anchor for the room.

The ideal piece is (naturally) a large, heavy vintage desk in a natural dark wood hue, but we don’t all have space for such pieces. The Maeve desk offers a touch of charm and modernism at an affordable price. Alternatively, something simple yet eye-catching like the Malena desk does the job equally well.

Office decor should be minimal and inspire, so decorate subtly while keeping your retro theme in mind.

If you do want to opt for a different room highlight, a bookshelf like the Alfie shelves can also serve that purpose. Adding lighting and decor surrounding such a piece can give the office another pleasing dimension.

With the final room down, let’s talk about some best practices when furnishing.

Colours, Materials and Lighting Strategy

Mid-century style is all about bold shapes and colours. So it’s ideal to pick out a focal point that has something to offer. There are a wide variety of colours that complement the style, including shades of blue, sea green, maroon, yellow, and even grey. Don’t hesitate to add a splash of colour with bold geometric or abstract patterns as well.

As for materials, a blend of wood, metal and glass is popular in the style. Think of the wooden coffee tables with a glass inlay, for example.

Finally, it’s always a good idea to make the most of natural light. Beyond that, you can use floor lamps, spotlights, or accent lighting to highlight your key feature. You can also make use of diffused overhead light to create the warm and inviting feel common in mid-century rooms.

Practical Planning

The last thing to keep in mind while creating your retro haven is practicality. Keep traffic flow in mind while you select the ideal placement for your focal pieces. Try to keep the rooms easy to navigate to maintain that openness and warmth commonly associated with 1950’s styles. No one likes having to shimmy past furniture just to take a seat.

Another aspect of practicality is the durability of your chosen pieces. Go with hardy materials that will last through daily wear for spots like the living room.

Your Mid-Century Haven is Within Reach

Designing a room yourself can be a challenge. But few simple key points can virtually guarantee success.

  • Follow the principles of mid-century design.
  • Consider creating a colour palette ahead of time.
  • Shop around and look out for bargains on retro furniture.

Remember to revise your planning as you navigate through the design process. This way, you’ll end up with a beautiful and practical vintage room.

Mid-Century Focal Points FAQs

What makes a piece of furniture a focal point?
A focal point is an element of the room that draws attention and anchors the space. You can use a bold accent chair, an eye-catching table, or a large painting or piece of architecture.

When selecting a piece for a mid-century-dominant room, make sure it fits the fundamentals of the style.

How do I choose the right statement piece for my space?
The first step is to plan roughly based on the space you have available and the existing furniture you would like to incorporate into the design. Next, select a colour palette and then shop around. Your statement piece should fit the palette, but not seamlessly. Standing out will help capture the eye but conforming to the colour palette in some way will prevent ruining the overall look.

Can mid-century modern furniture work with other styles?
Absolutely. There are plenty of blended styles that make use of retro principles. Scandinavian, urban modern, and industrial, to name just a few.

How do I arrange furniture to emphasise a focal point?
The best is to set your focal point in a central spot in the room, where it’s easily visible upon entering, and then design around it. For example, if you have a fine vintage sofa, place it in the centre or far end of the entrance and flank it with your other furniture.

Lighting and decor can also go a long way to adding additional emphasis.
